France grilles is an organisation in France to coordinate the deployment of public grid computing projects. This organisation is based on government, public research firms and universities, including :
Moreover, France Grilles aims at setting up coordination with research grids such as Grid 5000 governed by INRIA on one hand, and with High Performance Computing HPC through interactions with GENCI on the other hand. Indeed, one of the 11 recommendations of the last CSCI report published in April 2010 [1], deals with interactions set-up within communities using both production grids and supercomputers.
France Grilles kick-off meeting was at the end of June 2010 and has been officially launched at the end of September 2010 [2] [3] [4] [5], [6].

France Grilles represents France in international grid projects and is namely entitled to be the French NGI with regards to EGI.eu. As all NGIs, its main goal is to further deploy a sustainable national production grid offering a high level of service to all scientific communities, especially those structured around Very Large Research Infrastructures (TGIR) in France and European Research Infrastructures ESFRI, to support the emergence of regional initiatives around PRES, universities or “Initiatives d’excellence” by integrating them into a national framework and to integrate academic clouds in the production grid.
France Grilles is governed by a "conseil de groupement" whose president is currently Daniel Egret who represents CPU. The Director of France-Grilles is Vincent Breton, Research Director at CNRS. Indeed, CNRS is in charge of operational matters on behalf of the GIS.
There are mainly two ways by which grids have been emerging in France in the last 10 years.
One way is through thematic needs.
The other way is through regional approaches :
